Title: 明治期における日本語教本の研究(2) : アーネストM.サトウ著"KUAIWA HEN : Twenty-Five Exercises in the Yedo Colloquial"の日本語教育における意義

Authors: 中川, かず子

Abstract: At the end of the Edo Period, Western diplomats and missionaries came to Japan and wrote Japanese language textbooks for non-Japanese. Some of them were well-known and came to be referred to as samples of the language at that time. Ernest M. Satow's "Kuaiwa Hen-Twenty-five exercises in Yedo Colloquial (published in 1873)" was one of them. Satow came to Japan in 1862 as a student interpreter for the Council of Britain. He was then promoted to be an official interpreter for the Council in 1865. In the Meiji Period, since Satow's role in Japan was very important as he was somewhat acting as a coodinator between Britain and Japan, this may have encouraged him to master the language in order to better understand Japanese culture and people. This paper introduces the contents of "Kuaiwa Hen", viewed as a language textbook, that is, to examine the syllabus design of the exercises as well as what learners can learn from the book. Together with the variety of the language, readers can obtain a lot of information about the cultural and social aspects of those days. In her last paper, the author wrote about S. R. Brown's "Colloquial Japanese (1863)". It is noted that both Satow and Brown had focused the spoken aspects of Japanese in the Edo Period by collecting samples. Contemporary Japanese language education owes much to these Western scholars' great pioneering efforts in compiling textbooks of spoken language.
