How has this multi-racial image of the country beendisseminated among students via history textbooks? This study examined thetransformation of Singapore’s self-image as a multi-racial nation by exploring variousdescriptions of ethnic diversity and racial issues, in history textbooks published from1999 to 2015. Consequently, the study revealed that the latest textbook described andadmired richer ethnic diversity than previous textbooks did. This suggests thatSingapore’s self-image changed from a multi-racial one to an ethnically more diverse one.The study also reveals that the government used history textbooks to facilitate youngpeople’s adaptation to a globalized Singapore which is characterized by an increasingdiversity.
