A number of institutional models of virtual universities, i.e., a university without a specific campus where students attend courses in person, are briefly described, and examples are presented. Since students attending classes on a campus is quite different from students studying via Internet-linked computers, some of the aspects involving the impact of the medium on the dynamics and psychology of online interactions are discussed and summarized. In regard to the actual learning taking place, a modified version of conventional education theory that can describe the learning process involved in a virtual classroom is defined and discussed.
