| 抄録: | 1892年に英国人宣教師ジョン・バチェラーによって出版された日本北海道案内記は、1893年のシカゴ万博会場で来訪者に配布する目的で書かれていたことから、初期の外国人むけの北海道旅行ガイドブックといえる。北海道案内記は総論と行程部分に分かれ、北海道の将来性と地理上の優位性だけでなく、外国人が自分たちの生活水準をできるだけ維持しながら旅行することができることが記述されている。さらに、スポーツレクリエーションを中心としたアクティビティやアイヌを中心とした文化の記述は、これまで日本側の要請で作られてきた自然などを「みせる」観点から、「体験する」観点で書かれていることが分かった。北海道案内記の資料はマレー社の日本案内書に利用されたため、長きにわたり多くの外国人の目に触れられてきた。さらに万博会場で、輸出品のみならず案内記で北海道を紹介できたことから、この北海道案内記の刊行の意義は深いと考えられる。
An Itinerary of Hokkaido, written by British missionary John Batchelor in 1892, can be described as the first guidebook for travelers to Hokkaido. It is divided into two parts; general remarks on Hokkaido and an itinerary. It was written for distribution at the Chicago Exposition of 1893, not only to introduce geographic features and future potential of Hokkaido, but also to provide foreign travelers with practical information about daily living. In addition to descriptions of Ainu culture there was a focus on activities and recreational sports. It was written in terms of "experience" instead of "sightseeing" that had been the characteristic of guidebooks previously published about Japan. The inclusion of "An Itinerary of Hokkaido" was significant because it followed the pattern used in Murray's Handbooks to travel in various parts of the world, which had been familiar to many foreigners for a long time. Batchelor's guidebook was able to publicize not only the products of Hokkaido but also to introduce important aspects of the culture of Hokkaido. |
